1- It can come embedded in the track which only leaves us the option to process it along with the direct sound.
2- It can come in a track parallel to the direct signal which allows us to treat it separately.
3- It can be recreated artificially with plugins or hardware which allows us to process the signal before, after or separately and even replace the effect.
Which is the best? It's possible that many prefer 2 or 3 since these allow more possibilities but there are some cases where we might want to treat the track as described in #1.
For example, in this track the reverb comes from a combination of balance between the direct and ambient microphones. Here we simply increased the volume of ROOM, lowered MIC1 and completely muted MIC2. The result is a very natural sound of a guitar in the middle of a room. Then we added a good amount of #compression BEFORE the amp sim and therefore the reverb which made the interpretation more stable and easy to understand without affecting the ambience which is still soft and natural.
However, in the solo #guitar, we decided to compress the entire signal, including the reverb. In this case we used less ROOM but we inserted AR Plates afterwards with a quite high percent of WET signal. As we have seen before, the combination of different types of reverbs can often result in a more realistic sound. Then we inserted the API-2500 compressor AFTER, which will compress the entire signal including the ROOM and Plates. The result is an increase in character and presence of the ambience which also pumps with the long attack creating an attractive effect.
