The Titanic departed from Southampton, England, on its ill-fated voyage 107 years ago today, April 10, 1912. The ship left port with 2,240 people on board but only enough lifeboats for 1,178. That flaw became apparent just four days later when an iceberg gouged a 300-foot gash in the ship’s hull. Due to the chaos surrounding the sinking, many of the seats on lifeboats were not filled and only 705 people survived.
