There are 3 distinct kinds of rings within an headphone jack.
These rings are non-conductive insulating rings that essentially insulate one section in the next so as to signify which components get electricity.
Single ring:
Typically 1 ring signifies that there are two segments so the plug is mono and performs the same sound in headphones.
Two rings:
And normal stereo headphones will have a tendency to have two rings producing three segments with two of them providing the link to the left and right speakers.
