"The Star Spangled Banner" composed by John Stafford Smith, lyrics by Francis Scott Key, arranged by Thomas Beveridge, from "The Spirit of Freedom: Patriotic Songs & Service Hymns" ℗ 2010 Gothic

On February 22nd, 2019, US Navy Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral John Richardson, announced that beginning June 4th, 2019, on the 77th anniversary of the Battle of Midway, Navy vessels will return to flying the 50-star jack, nearly 17 years since the First Navy Jack was put into use to symbolize the War on Terror.

This video was created in honor of that changeover. It features the flags of the fifty States and their dates of admission into the Union, either by ratification of the 1787 Constitution for the first thirteen, or by an Act of Congress for all the rest. As each state is revealed, it is placed on a blue field and represented by its coat of arms, if it has a current one, or by its seal, if it doesn't. The coats of arms and seals are arranged by their approximate relative geographic position*, in the formation of the fifty stars on the Union of the United States flag.

*Note: Great effort was taken to preserve the relative geographic positions of the fifty States. However, due to the uneven size distributions of the various States (namely, the eastern States being many and small, and the western States being few and large), some irregularities and inconsistencies may appear.
