How to SURF: Shortboard Pop Up & Sprint Paddle - Part I (Corrected)

How to SURF: Shortboard Pop Up & Sprint Paddle - Part I (Corrected) Note: please, do not grab the rails like I do in this early video. It is actually much easier to pop up with hands flat on the deck. Even you can train yourself not to upset the board by grabbing it, the physiology of the body makes it an inferior techniques.

A guide for beginner-intermediate surfers transitioning to faster, bigger, hallow and pitching surf. The main idea being that beginner surfers rarely have easy access to larger consistent easy waves either due to crowded lineups or local surf quality. This means that they will need to learn how to deal with late takeoffs and larger fast pitching close out waves to be able to progress safely. This will require ability to paddle and take off with proficiency in less than ideal conditions and locations.

Regarding rail grabbing vs hand planting... I have been lately experimenting with planting my hands on the deck vs grabbing the rail. For me personally, planting the hands flat improves my ability to lift the body and carry the hips.

After checking out this guide, I highly recommend the video at the link below, showing ultimate surfers in ultimate conditions.... I may be wrong, but I see pelvis lifted in line with shoulders with the help of knees and (possibly just) rising water behind, a one-two swing up and swing through of the feet with back then front placement, as well as clear engagement of the rail, as soon as practically possible, and forward transfer of the weight for maximum drop speed. Also, note a clear grab rail to stabilize the board, as well as to move it on the face in critical conditions. Hand dragging for stalling, loading the fins and angling the board back up the face. The shoulders, head is lifted but center of gravity is definitely shifted forward of the center (this requires a paddling technique with a good back arch, so that you can modulate the weight on the drop). Because of the back foot swing up, it might be safe to assume that these guys are not prepping the back foot on the back stop before popping up, as many are suggesting. This looks to be a clear knee/buoyancy pelvis pop, then pelvis/foot swing through and plant, not back foot to groin then push and plant.
in particular:
1) @2m34s you can see the back foot lifted above water AND the nearly flat pelvis being raised by the knees and possibly buoyancy/the angle of thighs against water here:
1) @4m17s .. the nearly square hips -
3) @29s Can clearly see the back foot sole above water, as pelvis lifts -

If you have access to consistent clean waves, chances are, you don't need this video. Unfortunately, many of us don't get too many chances to practice and get it right. This video can save you a lot of time in that case.
