A British family caught in deadly storms in Greece told how they 'thought they'd die' as "golf balls from hell" fell from the sky. Liz Travis, 52, was on holiday in Halkidiki with her family when they got caught up in the extreme weather in Greece which has seen six people killed and more than 100 injured. The grandma described her family crouching on the floor of a taxi with their heads down, guarding her two year-old grandson as the storm lashed outside. She described fearing the car would turn over as it rocked, with tree branches hitting the vehicle on their way back to Halkidiki after visiting a nearby village. Liz said they were shaking, thought they would die, and said she began praying in fear despite not being religious. The sales negotiator from Bishopstoke claims they even saw a car appearing to slip over the edge of a cliff and admitted she woke up from a nightmare this morning following the traumatic scenes they saw. "I'm not even religious but I started praying. I was doing cross signals across my chest." She added: "We saw a power cable come down on the motorway. "We saw a car slip over the edge of a cliff, we just can't believe it. "The Greeks said they've never experienced anything like it. "I woke up this morning having had a nightmare and shouted 'get the car off the cliff'. "I have been traumatised." Liz and her family went on an evening excursion to nearby village Afytos, about 40 minutes from their hotel. As there were seven of them, they had arranged for two taxis to pick them up at 10pm last night. Liz was in the car with her husband James Travis, 51, her 26-year-old daughter Sian Yates and grandson Finley Yates, two. In the taxi behind were Sian's husband Jamie Yates and his parents. As soon as they got in the cars, thunder and lightening hit and all the lights went out in Afytos amid a power cut. Within two minutes on the road, "golf ball size" hail stones began falling and the taxi driver desperately searched for a safe space to hide. Liz told: "The taxi driver said 'I've got to pull over, there are stones coming out of the sky'. "She said 'I've got to find a safe place to park'. "In minutes there were golf balls of hell coming out of the sky hitting the car. "We couldn't see where we were going, cars were putting their hazards on. "We were only going a few miles per hour as the taxi driver couldn't see, she was crawling. "We found a driveway and pulled into it - five minutes into the journey. "The gates were swinging back and forth. "The car was rocking and we thought we were going to turn over. "Tree branches were hitting us, we could hear the sound of the water gushing. " When they stopped in a driveway, Liz said they all sheltered on the floor of the car. She told: "We were all crouching on the floor of the car.
