The first expansive modern suburbs, built during the Industrial Revolution, were meant to get people out of dirty industrial centers and into the cleaner, greener periphery. But the world has changed, and today it's the suburbs that are destroying the environment, while urban life may hold the key to preserving it. In this first part of our reporting on the suburbs and the environment, we cover suburban greenhouse gas emissions, and the many ways in which the suburbs for us to pollute.
