Since 2006, the University of California Irvine has had in place a discriminatory policy that uses citizenship to determine who is required and exempt from taking an English proficiency test for Teaching Assistant eligibility. This is problematic as research has shown that citizenship is an unreliable predictor to English proficiency. Other indicators, such as English fluency, educational and work credentials are more reliable indicators to measure English proficiency. Not only is the criterion a fallacy, it is also less equitable than other peer UC institution. This video showcases testimonies of the student workers who have been adversely impacted by this inequitable policy.
