Activists all abuzz over use of pesticides in Europe

Activists all abuzz over use of pesticides in Europe (31 Jul 2019) Environmental campaigners gathered outside the European Commission on Wednesday asking for an end to the usage of bee killing pesticides.

The campaigners were part of the Pesticide Action Network (PAN), a coalition of over 600 non-governmental organisations, institutions and individuals in over 60 countries worldwide, fighting to tackle the harmful effects of hazardous pesticides.

Martin Dermine, a policy officer for PAN Europe, said the coalition was launching a new intiative called 'Save Bees and Farmers' "because we are convinced that bees' health and the health of the environment are intimately linked."

Dermine said PAN was asking the commission to establish a plan to phase out pesticides within 15 years.

"We also ask the commission to put a plan to restore biodiversity in farming area because in many areas there is no more space for biodiversity, and we also ask the commission to support farmers in the transition towards a pesticide free agriculture," he added.

The campaigners delivered a large placard letter to Tom Tynan, a member of the Agriculture and Rural Development Commissioner's Cabinet, who said the commission would consider the request.
