In 2003, the diamond industry, NGOs, and 81 governments implemented the now UN-mandated Kimberley Process to prevent conflict diamonds from entering the rough diamond trade. Thanks to these efforts, conflict diamonds have been virtually eliminated from the market. Concurrently, the industry continues to have a positive socioeconomic impact on the people and communities within which it operates, positively benefiting over 10 million people worldwide, as well as making important strides in reducing and controlling its environmental footprint.
