It has been some really nice Caribbean sailing along the south coast of Puerto Rico, and I am just starting to figure out my pace when I am beating directly into the wind. On a typical 8 hour day of sailing, a nice goal is to make about 40nm of distance. When the wind and waves are in your way and you are going directly into them, I have found that 15nm is about the best you can do... even though you are still sailing a total of about 40 under the keel tacking back and forth. Its painfully slow progress, and every mile gained east shall not be given up at this point. The passage to windward is really showing its teeth, and its easy to understand why this is a serious right of passage for all sailors. The way to address the difficult conditions is early morning sails, leave early and get in to your spot early. Easier said than done, and in this episode we find ourselves out at sea when its time to be at anchor sipping pina coladas!
