(27 Aug 2019) Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad criticised big world powers' disregard to international laws. Speaking during a news conference with his Vietnam counterpart in Hanoi, Mahathir said many countries were affected as "big powers take the laws into their own hands".
His comment came as tension in the South China Sea increases.
China is deploying survey ship Haiyang Dizhi 8, escorted by several coast guard vessels, to the waters near Vanguard bank, where Vietnam is operating an oil and gas mission.
The area lies within 200 nautical miles from Vietnam and is classified as its Exclusive Economic Zone under the United Nations Convention for the Law of the Sea.
The news conference came after Mahathir and Phuc discussed bilateral issues, and witnessed the signing of a letter of intent on a Memorandum of Understanding on maritime law enforcement and search and rescue cooperation.
