New Moon Acolyte is a new 9-piece crafted set from Southern Elsweyr. It is quite a powerful set, with a drawback that matches. But perhaps we can offset that drawback with some clever thinking? The set's bonuses are below:
2-piece: Adds 833 Spell and Weapon Crit
3-piece: Adds 129 Spell and Weapon Damage
4-piece: Adds 1487 Spell and Physical Penetration
5-piece: Adds 481 Spell and Weapon Damage. Increases cost of active abilities by 5%.
As we can see, it is a powerful set. Burning Spellweave provides only ~346 effective Spell Damage. Spell Strategist provides 500 Spell Damage on only one enemy. Flanking provides 400 Weapon Damage when you are behind the target. This set adds 481 to both Weapon and Spell Damage as a flat bonus, although it increases the cost of all active abilities by 5 percent. Not numbers to laugh at. But what if we tried to offset it by using a sustain race?
Because this is a flat bonus, I used this set as my body set. I used a magicka warden, as that is the DPS I am most comfortable on. I used Zaan, Mother's Sorrow on the body, and Perfect Siroria on the front bar. I used an infused Absorb Magicka enchant on the back bar and an infused Flame Damage enchant on the front bar. I stuck with the Thief Mundus, although the Shadow should do equal or slightly better DPS. I used Ghastly Eye Bowl as my food. All parses were done on the 21m trial dummy.
I did a few parses on a magden to test out my theory. The additional resource cost on my Dunmer was brutal. With MS/Siroria, I had to do 1 heavy attack to sustain my rotation. Using NMA, I was using about 6 to 7 heavy attacks to sustain, which dropped my DPS. I was pulling ~3k to 4k lower on a Dunmer. Then I swapped to a Breton, the thinking being that the cost reduction and additional regen on a Breton may help to offset the increase in cost.
The theory actually ended up working very well. I did not have to heavy attack to sustain a light attack rotation. Plus, the DPS I pulled was only slightly less than a Dunmer running MS/Siroria. I'd strongly advise keeping an eye on this set if you're running a sustain race, as it definitely has the potential to be very powerful, assuming nothing changes in the future.
