When you hear the term “Minecraft trolling” today, you probably think of either some famous Minecraft YouTubers or harmless pranks you pull on one of your friends. While there isn’t any concrete definition of what a troll in Minecraft can be, there is a general understanding that trolling doesn’t involve any bad permanent damage; otherwise, it would be called griefing. When Minecraft was a newer game, however, this concept was not well-established. It was certainly gaining traction--no doubt--but griefing could easily pass for trolling and vice versa. The definition of the word trolling may not seem like that big a deal, but what if I told you that this ambiguity once almost led to the downfall of the entire genre? Yes you heard that right. At one point, Mojang said that no-one was allowed to post videos about Minecraft trolling. This is a history that no-one else will tell you about as of the making of this video. After you listen closely, you’ll understand why a lot of people have tried to forget about this incident. This led to a period of uncertainty and public outcry. It even had implications for some of the largest Minecraft YouTubers of the time.
Ladies and gentlemen, this is the time when trolling videos became illegal in Minecraft.
