WATCH: Military aid for Ukraine affects U.S. interests 'very directly,' Taylor says

Why does military assistance for Ukraine matter to American national security? In the first public impeachment hearing on Nov. 13, Rep. Adam Schiff, the chair of the House Intelligence Committee, asked the top U.S. diplomat in Ukraine to explain how security assistance for the European country protects U.S. interests. "The Russians are violating all of the rules, treaties, understandings that they committed to that actually kept the peace in Europe for nearly 70 years," Ambassador Bill Taylor said during the testimony, adding, "If we don't push back on that, on those violations, then that will continue." Taylor said that pushing back on those Russian actions affects "the kind of world we want to see overall."
