A paradigm shift has become urgent: we need to address animals as living beings to take care of and valorize, instead of a source of commodities to exploit. Xavier Manteca Vilanova, professor of animal behaviour and animal welfare at the School of Veterinary Science in Barcelona, gives us an overview on why animal welfare is important and what are the links between farm animal welfare, animal production and health, as well as, human health and well-being.
