So I may me doing wrong by my fish I fear....I have a 40 gallon bow front. I have 3 fish in there that were in my outdoor pond. I was going to try to winter them over outside but chickened out. I do 30-50% water changes every week because the big fish (I call him Bug) poops like a Clydesdale ...are my fish hating life in this size tank?

You need to check water parameters. One guy looks like he is starting to clamp his fins which is an immediate sign that something is wrong. Unless he was sleeping when you took this. The white one looks like a koi and already needs about that size tank just on his own. Get an API fresh water tester kit! As long as the water stays in check and its just for the winter they should be fine! And depending on where you are located goldfish do fine in cold water.

It perked up towards the end of the video so it's hard to tell. He could've been sleeping. Thats why I suggested the api test kit. As long as their water stays good they should be fine. They should over-winter fine in this size tank (the Koi won't be happy); I would take the large decor pieces out and thin the gravel bed. Mine do better with just a bit of sand and pebbles for poking around in.

I dont remember his name (wish I did) but there is a guy locally that has us all beat combined. And I have been in both these rooms. But in all fairness hes retired and had the time. Close to 3k gallons if I remember right.

Is it cruel to put a Betta into a 5 gallon long tank like a Fluval Spec 5? (Assuming it’s cycled, planted, with a heater, and flow reduced of course!) It seems lots of people think 5 gallons long is still just too small. So I’m worried it might be cruel. What do you think. I’m hoping for a big tank soon but also feel like maybe I could dip my toe in on something smaller like this now. Then it could become a hospital tank later.

5 gallons is more than enough. It's like with Oscars. The general consensus is that a 75 gallon tank is fine, but if you ask some people they push it to 150 and some people are crazy enough to say 200. If a fish is healthy and active and vibrant and eating then they are fine and I have never seen a betta that wasn't fine in a tank 3 gallons and above.

5 gallon is minimum RSPCA recommendation here in Oz. I think this size is fine for the fish, there’s just less maintenance with this compared to something half the size. 5 Gallon is fine. Consider huge by a lot of betta keepers, but some people in this group think it's small. Most show betta are kept in 5 liters (1.3gallon) with no plant. So they get enough swimming space to grow good finnage. Bigger is better I suppose, since you need to account for space for plants too. So 5 Gallon is plenty imo. In fact, this group's general opinion is that 3 gallon is the minimum.

My daughter has the 5gal spec in her room and her betta loves it as far as I can tell! I love the fluval set ups. We have 6 fluval tanks! We have an 14gal Evo that is set up as freshwater, 9 gal flex, 5 gal spec and 5gal chi and two 2.6gal specs as well! They are all amazing!

What is up with the cloudiness!?? Tank on the right is crystal clear. Left one has been pissing me off for weeks now. 2 weeks ago I put another power head in and it helped a bit but not much. Boxing Day I put another fx6 on it. Still not cleared up. Any thoughts? I’m almost out of ideas.
