Slow Motion Rocket Explosion! SpaceX IFA Launch!

Slow Motion Rocket Explosion! SpaceX IFA Launch! I collaborated with Tim Dodd the Everyday Astronaut to film the Crew Dragon In-Flight Abort test. I provided the software, OPT Telescopes provided a 10" Meade LX200, and Cosmic Perspective provided steady hands to control this powerful telescope as Falcon 9 launched from pad 39A.

SpaceX deliberately sacrificed the first block 5 Falcon 9 to test the abort system at the moment of maximum aerodynamic pressure about a minute and a half into the launch. The engines on the first stage shut down as Dragon fired its SuperDraco thrusters to escape. Moments later the rocket turned sideways and was destroyed by the aerodynamic forces.

Equipment provided by OPT Telescopes to make this video possible:
10” LX200

Counterbalance

Focal reducer

Visual back

Single Axis Camera mount

D-style dovetail plate for 10 LX200

Feathertouch SCT for F10 SCT

Focuser Motor for Feathertouch Microfocuser

Focuser motor controller for PC control

2” to T adapter

I would like to mention that I also purchased my own LX200 Classic from OPT Telescopes over 15 years ago and I highly recommend their services for all of your astronomical needs.

Launch!
