Terre d'Hermès EDT Vs Parfum Fragrance Review: A Surprising Contrast
While these are ostensibly the same formula in different concentrations, we also find some other differences.
[00:40] Part 1: Composition
The main differences between the two is that the EDT is zestier, with more of a traditional orange flavour to it. Arguably, the EDT is less refined, but we have found that it performs similarly, perhaps even better than the Parfum.
Meanwhile, its Parfum counterpart is oilier, deeper, further towards the bitter, grapefruit end of citrus. Afterwards, it goes more into an incense and sandalwood character.
We're looking at around a 15% fragrance concentration for the EDT versus 30-40% for a Parfum. To learn more about fragrance concentrations, check out the article linked above.
However, you can see we have good reason to be surprised by the wake and strength, projection and longevity of the EDT. In our experience, it has been as good, if not superior to that of the Parfum!
The batch number of the EDT, Paul's second bottle, is 4LBAE, while the Parfum is DDAAP.
[02:09] Part 2: Seasonality
A quick caution from our experience with these fragrances: don't buy a 200ml version blind!
For Charles-Philippe, these are milder month scents: spring and autumn. On the other hand, Paul prefers these as winter fragrances, conjuring mulled wine & clove-studded pomanders.
[03:47] Part 3: Feedback
Though we haven't had negative feedback on either, fragrance community discussions place the EDT as zestier & more alive. The Parfum, in contrast, leaves a more mature, well-rounded impression, a more intense experience overall.
[04:19] Part 4: Impressions
For men in our age range, late twenties and early thirties, the EDT is perfect. Meanwhile, the Parfum is suitable for a more mature gentleman as its depth may lend sophistication and subtlety. Although, a younger man might opt for Parfum in more refined settings, such as business professional settings and formal functions.
When the Parfum came out, Charles-Philippe was 18 and thought it was a fragrance he would want to wear when he gets older.
We find the Parfum's profile very refined and sophisticated fragrance, while not overpowering. Therefore, a man in his 40s and beyond could definitely benefit from this scent.
This parfum came out when Charles-Philippe was 18, and for him it was an aspirational fragrance. He smelled it and thought, "this is what I want to wear when I'm an adult." However, nowadays he smells it and still doesn't quite feel ready for it.
As far as formality goes, an older accountant or lawyer could pull off wearing this to work in the cooler months. Otherwise, it's an excellent formal evening fragrance, a "black tie in a bottle."
Onto masculinity, the oily grapefruit head, earthy patchouli and sandalwood with benjoin add up to a conventional masculine character.
[05:54] Part 5: Presentation
Because we enjoy the EDT and it's cheaper at $165 USD for the larger 200ml size, it's a better value for money for us. However, if you need the sophistication of the Parfum, $220 USD at 200ml, that will be a good value for you.
The bottles and packaging are essentially the same for both fragrances.
[06:41] Conclusion
We hope you take away from our video that different strengths of the same fragrance might represent distinct characters! Therefore, don't buy big bottles blind, even if you enjoy another concentration of that scent.
Both are fantastic fragrances, but CP & Paul both feel that the EDT fits them better at their age. Meanwhile, the Parfum is a better fit for a more mature gentleman.
REMEMBER to comment! We'd love to hear your thoughts on this fragrance as well as similar smells, how it can be layered with others and when you'd wear it!
Yours,
The Bespoke Unit Team
