A former police officer used his position to groom and sexually abuse young girls. David Waller, 34, was convicted of 10 offences by a jury today after a three-week trial at Teesside Crown Court . He was sentenced to 12 years behind bars, Teeside Live reported. Judge Hedworth said: "You revelled in the role of leading man, a police constable, having your own house and car, and being a pilot. "You are, demonstrably, a sexual predator." Jurors convicted him on one count of rape, three of causing or inciting a child to engage in sexual activity, three of meeting or attempting to meet a child following sexual grooming and two of sexual activity with a child. He had met some of the girls through his work with theatre groups and as a flying instructor. All were underage except for the teenage rape complainant. He was also convicted on one charge of misconduct in a public office by having sex with a sixth complainant, a woman whom he met in his work as a PC. He was cleared of one charge of sexual assault, where it was alleged he touched a woman's bottom. He denied all the allegations and said he did not groom, have sex with or touch underage girls or rape the teenager. Waller worked for Cleveland Police between 2006 and 2010 and said he since worked as an airline pilot, aviation lecturer and freelance theatre technician. The jury began its deliberations on Wednesday afternoon and reached its unanimous decisions on Friday. Last week, Waller was cleared of two different rape charges . He had been accused of plying a girl, who was in her teens but not underage, with alcohol before raping her several years ago. The prosecution alleged he had sex with her on several occasions while she was drunk and he was sober. He denied the two rape charges, maintaining it only happened once and was consensual, and he was found not guilty, on a judge's direction, of the two rape charges concerning that teenage complainant.
