Israeli illegal settlements under the spotlight

Israeli illegal settlements under the spotlight The United Nations Chief António Guterres says the organisation's long-held position on the illegality of Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank has not changed.

This comes after the United States made a major policy shift when Secretary of State Michael Pompeo announced that Israeli civilian settlements in the West Bank were not, per se, inconsistent with international law.

The new policy - which runs counter to a 1978 State Department Legal opinion that civilian settlements in the occupied territories are inconsistent with international law - will also pit the United States against almost all of the international community that views settlements as a violation of international law and an obstacle to peace between Israel and the Palestinians.
